Datawind launches new UbiSlate 7C+Edge in India

Datawind launches new UbiSlate 7C+Edge in IndiaUK's technology firm, Datawind, which is the maker of affordable Aakash tablets, has announced the launch of its new UbiSlate 7C+Edge tablet computer in the Indian market.

The new UbiSlate 7C+Edge tablet is an upgraded version in the company's Ubislate range. It comes with Google's new Aroid 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich and runs on 1Ghz processor with 512 MB of Ram. The tablet offers 4GB flash memory that can be expanded to 32GB via Micro SD slot and has an Ubisurfer web browser for easier access to the internet for the users.

The new version will also support micro-SD and Mini-USB ports and has a front VGA camera allowing users to make video calls. The tablet can also be used to make telephone calls. It is believed that the next batch of Aakash tablets will be very similar to the new version of the tablet. The new UbiSlate 7C+Edge tablet computer will come with a price tag of Rs 5,999.

Datawind had secured the tender to deliver 100,000 tablets but the company has not been able to make deliveries on time and the ministry has as a result put the order on hold to review the situation. The Indian authorities had placed an order of 100,000 units of the original affordable Akash tablet that are meant to empower higher education students in the country and fill the digital divide.

India's union human resource development ministry has put the order for 50 million units of Akash tablet from vendor Datawind on hold due to various reasons including production delays and possibly due to availability of a wide variety of cheaper alternatives.
