Criticism over wind turbine producing just £5 worth of electricity a month
A project by the Welsh Government to build a wind turbine in a calm area, which is now producing electricity worth just £5 per a month, is facing a lot of criticism.
The Welsh Government had invested £48,000 of taxpayer money to develop the project. Estimates showed that the wind turbine would take 452 years to generate enough energy to pay for itself. Some engineers have said that the mechanism issue might be the reason for such low level of energy generation but the company behind the project has said that it is due to the location of the project.
The wind turbine measuring 60ft has been developed in a valley two miles from blustery Cardigan Bay, near Government offices at Aberystwyth in West Wales. The turbine was developed in 2009 and it has been monitored since January in the previous year.
Jonathan Isaby, political director of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said, "If this project had been started when Elizabeth I was on the throne, it would only be reaching break-even point now, sixty years into the reign of Elizabeth II. It beggars belief that tens of thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money was squandered on a scheme with such a minuscule return."
