Mr Clegg said the government is aiming to attract investment in the UK's offshore generation industry from global firms. The country's wind farm industry has grown with the help fo government support and investments. The wind turbine owners in the UK received £1.2 billion in consumer subsidies during the previous year, according to the figures.

The industry supports 12,000 jobs and the supplement on electricity bills mean that each wind farm job is effectively subsidised by £154,000. The wind farm industry is facing opposition from residents in the coastal areas. About
3,000 turbines are expected to be built across the country in future, according to estimates.
