CDC report says 40 Million Contact Lens Wearers Are Putting Their Eyes at Risk

A report by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that about 41 million adults in America wear contact lenses, and almost every wearer is doing something wrong and getting germs into their eyes.

The leading national public health institute of the US said that almost every contact lens wearer is paying for doing it wrong. More than 30% of them admitted that they visited a physician due to painful eyes, the agency revealed.

More than 50% wearers reported that they slept without removing their contact lens, while over half of them admitted they topped off solution instead of changing the lens. Adding to that, 61% of the wearers said they swam while wearing their lenses, according to the CDC report.

The federal agency said the survey is disturbing as it only included adults, and chances are high that teenagers more likely not to follow the rules of contact lens hygiene. The report by the agency showed that about 33% wearers said they rinsed their contact lenses in tap water, while about 17% reported they stored their lenses in tap water.

According to CDC, household tap water could be safe for drinking, but it still contains some microorganisms which are not appropriate for contact lenses and can contaminate lens cases, which further can cause eye infection. "Contact lens wearers represent a significant proportion of the U.S. population, and their contact lens hygiene habits put them at risk for painful, costly eye infections that could lead to vision problems", as per CDC report.
