Cancer survivors low on hormones
Male victims who are survivors of cancer have to fight with long term effects of low testosterone levels.
According to the findings the "testosterone deficiency", is supposedly caused due to numerous chemotherapy or the radiotherapy session which a patient undergoes. This is possibility which has been concluded after considering data of few patients.
However a comparison was drawn with the cancer patients aged in their thirties and the normal males who had no history of cancer and were clear of all 213 controls. It was seen that the survivors scored very low on the hormonal factor as the testosterone count was minimal compared to the healthy individuals.
According to Professor Richard Ross, who led the researchers, said that the relationship between testosterone levels was "complex". He further added: "This is an important study demonstrating that low testosterone levels are common in male cancer survivors and associated with an impaired quality of life. We now need interventional trials with testosterone to determine which young male cancer survivors will benefit from replacement therapy."
However if the case continues to be the same with the patients the possibility of hormone replacement therapy in affected men would have to be carefully judged to make sure it was a safe option for patients.
