Calcineurin - a thread of hope for cancer

CalcineurinThe latest research has given scientists a thrust to study on an enzyme that may help tackle cardiovascular diseases.

The enzyme is called calcineurin plays a vital role in normal functioning and proper regulation of the heart. Dr. Marjorie Mailet says, "We found that when you eliminate calcineurin, a pool of genes that regulates calcium, the heart goes awry. This leads to defects in the growth and proliferation of heart cells, heart disease and arrhythmia, loss of contractility and heart failure and disease."

The research is being led by scientists of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Centre (CCHMC) and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMC).

Through the findings, the researchers were able to conclude that calcineurin in hearts of mice is linked to normal cardiac muscle contraction, rhythm and maintenance of cardio activity. But it still is in process to check the limitations of its role.

It is known that Calcium is important for growth and the contraction of heart muscle. Also, if there is an inadequate supply of Calcium, the heart may incur abnormalities which may prove fatal for the being. It is believed this advancement can lead onto very important conclusion and may result in finding a cure for cancer.
