Cabinet approves creation of new Gorkha Hill Council
New Delhi, Nov 30: The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for creation of an autonomous self governing Council called Gorkha Hill Council, Darjeeling (GHC) in West Bengal under the Sixth Schedule.
The Bills require amendment of articles 244 and 332 and the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
This would enable to implement the MoU signed with the approval of CCPA for creating a new autonomous self governing Council to replace the existing Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council in West Bengal.
It would also fulfil the economic, educational and linguistic aspirations, socio-cultural and ethnic identify of the people of Darjeeling district, duly protecting the rights of the non-tribals.
Besides, it would speed up the infrastructure development in the area. (ANI)
