Blue-green Algae Toxins not behind Dog’s sudden death
Earlier this week, a dog died after having water near the boat launch at Ponderosa State Park. It was suspected that the death might have taken place due to blue-green algae toxins. But now, an expert has said to health officials that the toxins did not lead to dog's death.
Stephanie Jenkins, who works for the Boise Regional Office of the DEQ, said that she has not found an evidence of a bloom. "The water was very clear. There were no indications of a bloom, but I did take samples. We should have those back tomorrow. ... It's very unlikely that we would get a result that would suggest a bloom", affirmed Jenkins.
Jenkins was of the view that there has no reported case of harmful algae blooms on Payette Lake. However, then also a health advisory has been issued Thursday afternoon for Hayden Lake. At the lake, a species of blue-green algae was identified. Similar advisories are also active for Fernan Lake and Avondale Lake.
As per researchers, the season could prove severe in terms of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie's western basin. A large crop of cyanobacteria in Lake Erie is expected this season. But along with this, it has also been said that public health will not be affected by toxic algae.
Algae problem is a regular sight on Lake Erie. Experts said that blooms on the western basin can be seen on satellite images.
