Benazir, Rajiv Gandhi suffered similar fates

Bhutto AttackNew Delhi / Rawalpindi, Dec.27 : Thursday afternoon’s assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh area can be compared in terms of fate to what former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi suffered.

Both were children of former Prime Ministers i.e. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Indira Gandhi. Both came from prominent political dynasties in their respective countries, and were given the best in terms of education.

While Bhutto went to Oxford and Harvard, Rajiv Gandhi was sent for his higher studies to the Imperial College London, the University of London, and Cambridge University’s Trinity College.

Both became Prime Ministers after the assassinations of their parents. Both won massive mandates from the people of their respective countries.

Both suffered similar fates while campaigning for elections. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991 in Sriperumbedur, Tamil Nadu, by a Sri Lankan female suicide bomber, when he was no longer a Prime Minister.

Benazir Bhutto was shot at point blank range by two attackers in the head and the neck after participating in a rally of her party. The attack was immediately followed by a suicide bomb attack that claimed the lives of 20 other people. (ANI)
