A befitting tribute to the city

This is one play that has a hell of a lot of inconsistency. Not in its performance — the play has already staged more than 200 shows — but in its content that has been kept inconsistent along the years to give it a refreshing appeal. When God Said Cheers has also set a record of its own kind — the play has consistently stayed off the regular theatre spaces in the country, and has always been played at restaurants and cafes despite a huge fan following.

Cyrus reminds us of an interesting start for his play, which was penned by film director Anurag Kashyap in 2003. He says, "In those times, money was scarce in theatre, and Anurag and I had very limited plans for it — maybe a couple of shows for well-wishers and friends. When we approached NCPA for a date, we were outrightly rejected. We did not want to back out, so we borrowed space from one of my friends who ran a restaurant, and it turned out to be a huge success in those days."

An excited Cyrus says, "Anurag and I decided to stick to the tradition of staying away from the bandwagon of Prithvi, NCPA and Sophia. We rewrote a few rules in theatre and have consistently performed at parallel venues."

Interestingly, Cyrus's play was also invited by the United Nations to perform at Colombo in 2007, and is a conversation between the proverbial man and God who have a chance encounter in one of the city cafes. While beside Cyrus, Anurag Kashyap himself was the other actor in this two-member play, veteran theatre actor Tom Altar happened to fill into the latter's shoes.

And according to Cyrus, it has been one of the finest performances given by the senior actor. He says, "There is so much to learn from a guy who perhaps was performing on the stage even before we were born. He is so good at improvising on the stage that every staging turns out to be utterly different from the last one."

Keeping the tradition alive of having new elements in the play every time it is staged, Cyrus has adapted the storyline to mark three months since the Mumbai terror attacks. Cyrus will be staging When God said Cheers at the Mumbai Times Café today.
