BBMP unprepared to prevent flooding

BBMP unprepared to prevent floodingIt is believed that the civic services body in Bangalore, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has not made arrangements to prevent flooding in lower lying areas in eth city even as the monsoon is expected to arrive in just three weeks.

Reports suggest that most of the BBMP engineers, who were assigned the responsibility of carrying on flood prevention work, were busy with the election duty in the state. The Meteorological Department has said that the city is expected to receive around 70 mm rainfall in June.

BBMP official said commissioner Siddaiah has installed all the zonal commissioners and chief engineers to keep tracks of the calls at the centre. The Forest Department Cell has been asked to cut trees that have week routs. BBMP had identified around 230 flood-prone and low-lying areas in the city and the officials will be working to make sure that the rainwater does not flood these areas and trouble residents.

BBMP has nine control rooms in its zones and the authorities have deputed Prahari teams and forest teams in the zones for assistance. M K Gunashekar, Opposition leader in the BBMP Council has said that the engineers were not able to carry on required work because they were busy with election work in the state.
