Bar Refaeli criticised for Israeli Defence Force draft-dodging

Bar Refaeli criticised for Israeli Defence Force draft-dodgingMelbourne, Jun 2 : Israeli model Bar Refaeli has come under attack from a retired Israeli General, who took offence at her dodging the country's mandatory military service.

Major-General (Res.) Elazar Stern, who has criticised her, said that he has stopped buying products advertised by the supermodel.

"Ever since they decided to put a draft dodger on their products - external beauty overpowering internal beauty," the Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying.

"I called the companies and the managers of those companies, and they told me `that's what the youths like'. I told them our job is to stress what the youths should like, not what they like now," he said.

The General's comments were part of a speech criticizing Tal Law exempting yeshiva students from military service.

According to Zohar Abargil of the Israeli Forum for the Promotion of Equal Share in the Burden, 34 per cent of the Jewish population does not serve in the army.

"In another six years this figure will grow to 47 per cent, and it 2025 it will surpass 50 per cent," Abargil said.

"The Tal Law exempts an entire sector from all types of service and distinguishes between different kinds of blood," he added.

The Israeli Defence Force is worried that the fall in personnel will affect the country's ability to defend itself. (ANI)
