Ban urges G20 to show unmistakable resolve to end financial crisis

Ban urges G20 to show unmistakable resolve to end financial crisis New York - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday urged the G20 summit in Washington to demonstrate its resolve to find solutions to the deepening financial crisis affecting countries around the world.

The summit on Saturday was called by the White House at the urging of European leaders to work out solutions to the current financial crisis.

"It is essential that the G20 meeting signals an unmistakable common resolve to oversome the crisis, to act together, to act with urgency and to show solidarity towards the neediest," Ban said in a message in advance of the summit on Saturday attended by the world's 20 wealthiest nations.

He urged them to remain committed to the UN Millennium Development Goals, which set the target date of 2015 to end poverty and hunger, halt the spread of HIV/AIDS, provide universal primary education to all children, end infant and maternal deaths and stop the deterioration of the environment.

He said the economic meltdown would not mean just an economic crisis, but would threaten human progress and the foundation for an open and dynamic world economy and inclusive globalization.

Ban, who will attend the G20 meeting, said more than 170 countries will not be represented in Washington and urged that their voices be heard. (dpa)
