Assocham demands for allowing private players in nuclear power generationAssocham has said that the Government should allow private players to generate nuclear power too. The company has urged the Govt. to take some simple policy decisions on such issues. Nuclear power generation is going to the upcoming and most sensitive sector in India.

The company has pointed out that the private firms should also be given a chance to hold majority stakes in this sector. But for such an involvement, the firms need to have some amendments in the Atomic Energy Act of 1962.

Assocham has said that Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) can rope in private players with minority stake, where the public and policy makers should kept above them in order to confidence in the regulatory body.

The chamber has also suggested that the private firm’s involvement need to be gradual and in a cautious manner as the sector is highly sensitive as high risk is also associated with this section. However, India aims to generate 20,000 MW of nuclear power by the year 2020.
