Arab League warns of repercussions of Sudan crisis
Cairo - Arab League Secretary-General Amr Mussa warned Wednesday that a decision by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to charge Sudan's president with genocide would have dangerous repercussions in the country.
Mussa said he would visit Sudan on Sunday after an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers Saturday in the league's Cairo headquarters.
Mussa was speaking to reporters after talks with visiting Sudanese Minister of State for Foreign Affairs al-Samani al-Wasila over the crisis triggered by a request made by the ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo on Monday that the court issue an arrest warrant for President Omar al-Bashir.
The move taken by the ICC was not well thought out and has created a very dangerous situation, Mussa said.
The Sudanese minister dismissed the court decision as "ill-considered," saying that Ocampo gathered testimonies from several countries, except Sudan. (dpa)
