Air India’s Dreamliner suffers windshield crack at height of 41,000 feetAir India has confirmed that one of its Dreamliner 787 suffered a crack in its windshield mid-air on Monday, adding to Seattle-based plane maker Boeing Co's woes.

Madhu C Mathen, local manager at Air India, said the Dreamliner suffered the crack when it was on its way Melbourne, with around 100 people on board, at an altitude of around 41,000 feet.

The commander of the plane briefed the civil aviation regulator DGCA that the full right side of the plane's windshield broke, apparently by the impact of a heating strip that exploded. It may be noted here that the heating strip maintains temperature so that the windshield doesn't develop condensation at great altitudes.

The mid-air crack in the windshield luckily didn't pose threat to passengers on board. The airline officials said the new windshield would be fixed soon, and that the passengers of the problematic plane were adjusted with other flights for their onward trip.

Boeing's Dreamliner 787 jets have been suffering technical glitches from the very beginning. In January, two incidents of battery fires in Japanese Dreamliners the global fleet of the jets to ground.

Boeing is now working with Air India to fix the windshield glitch in the Dreamliner.
