AI bets big on Dreamliners 787s, despite frequent technical glitches

DreamlinersAir India is advancing with its plans to deploy Boeing Dreamliner 787s on nearly half of its international operations by the end of current financial year, despite frequent technical glitches in the planes.

A senior Air India executive revealed that the airline had plans to deploy Dreamliners on more than 40 per cent on its global operations by March 2014.

The official added that the Delhi-Shanghai route would be operated by a Dreamliner from mid of December this year. On the Delhi-Tokyo route, the Boeing 777-200LR plane would also be replaced with a Dreamliner.

Speaking on the topic, the official said, "The Delhi-Shanghai route will be operated by the Dreamliner from mid-December. Thus, all of Air India's services to the Far East will be operated by the Dreamliner."

Air India has so far received 10 of the 27 Dreamliners it ordered from the American plane manufacturer. Four more Dreamliners will be delivered to the airline by March next year. The remaining planes are scheduled to be delivered by March 2015.

Seattle, U. S.-based Boeing's Dreamliner has been suffering technical glitches ever since its launch. In January this year, two incidents of battery fires in Dreamliners forced the international fleet of the Dreamliners to ground. Most recently, an Air India Dreamliner, operating on the London-Delhi route, made a priority landing at the IGI airport after its pilot detected a glitch in its braking-system.

A few days earlier, a Dreamliner owned by Air India developed a crack in its windshield when it was on its way to Melbourne, re-triggering safety concerns.
