Act up, guys!
If we take prestigious international awards as benchmarks, our homegrown technicians have definitely surpassed the feats of our actors. From AR Rahman, Resul Pookutty to Gulzar and some other talented artists have engraved a name on the world cinema circuit permanently and looks like in the years to come people from this lot are set to bring home more glory. So, where does that leave the actors?
Says Arjun Rampal, "Actors across the globe are the same and I think if any one of them says that they don't want to win an Oscar, then it is a pure lie as deep down everyone wants to win the best recognition an actor can get in the world which is an Academy Award. I would really want to win one someday if I can —whether through an Indian film or a Hollywood venture. Thousands of actors long to win the award; no one would say that he or she can give it a pass. Though our cinematic sensibility is different than that of the West, it is not a hindrance for any of our actors."
Genelia D'Souza feels, "Any artist or technician receiving an award is as important. It is a reward and being internationally acclaimed is great encouragement not only for that moment but also in a way of increasing the quality of work and making better films which is on account of the work of technicians."
Meanwhile, technicians are very happy that they are getting noticed globally, but are sad that they don't get the same spotlight in their motherland. Resul Pookutty earlier said, "We put our heart and soul in every film that we do. Our work is very intricate. It is great that we (technicians) are getting acclaim internationally because in India commercial success is looked at before recognising someone's work in a film...It is very frustrating sometimes but now that we are getting big recognition is the West, I think it balances out. But still, I would love to win awards in my motherland."
