47 Teeth found in cave in southern China
Forty-seven teeth have been found in a cave in southern China. As per archaeologists, the teeth belong to Homo sapiens and will help them know something new about ancient humans. The teeth date back 80,000 to 120,000 years.
The researchers said these teeth have been rewriting the story of how modern humans spread out of Africa. The research paper published in the journal Nature has unveiled that modern humans are supposed to have arrived in Asia 50,000 years ago.
It was then considered that the migration of modern humans have taken place at that time. But the latest finding has changed that timing. Study's co-author Maria Martinon--Torres was of the view, "They are from 30,000 to 70,000 years earlier in China than it was generally accepted that our species would have reached this region".
Dr. Martinon--Torres said that if the finding is compared on dental anatomy level then no difference will be found. Teeth were able to survive owing to their hard enamel coating. Dr. Martinon--Torres affirmed that teeth are quite inheritable therefore, they can reveal a lot about the species to which we belong.
Other information that teeth can provide include diet, about culture and pathologies suffered by the groups. Martinon--Torres said that a lot of discussion has taken place with regard to what has caused the extinction of Homo neanderthalensis. The new findings may help know the reason behind the demise of the Homo neanderthalensis.
