400 Employees kicked out by Reliance Retail in West Bengal

Reliance Retail - West BengalReliance Retail has terminated services of 400 employees in West Bengal. The company has not been able to start retail operations in the state due to opposition from the political parties and local trader unions. Reliance Fresh recently terminated services of nearly 1000 employees in Uttar Pradesh as well. The company has seen lot of protests in many states across India.

The company officials have informed that the services of 300 more employees could be terminated soon. Reliance offers cheap grocery items and fresh vegetables. The local traders do not want the company to open stores in West Bengal.

Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh ordered Reliance Fresh to close its stores in the state after protests by trader bodies and political parties. The stores of company were damaged during protests in many parts of the country. Reliance Fresh is re-thinking its strategy for Orissa. Koltata could have been a major market for the company.

Reliance will wait for some time before opening new stores. The company will concentrate on NCR, Mumbai and some other states where the opposition is less. The state government was offering police protection, but the company decided to shut the stores rather than running under police protection.

Reliance had big investment plans for West Bengal, but due to recent protests, the company has postponed the decision.
