2% of LPG subscribers forgo their entitlement to subsidized cylindersThe government will save as much as Rs 1,260 crore per annum on LPG alone as a huge number of people would forgo their entitlement to subsidized cylinders because of their reluctance to share bank account details, a recent survey indicated.

A survey conducted by the petroleum ministry in 20 districts, where the government's direct transfer scheme has been implemented, revealed that 2 per cent of the LPG users didn't take subsidized cylinders as it required them to furnish their Aadhaar numbers and bank account details.

An official from the ministry said people don't want to disclose their bank account details because they don't want to get under the government's scrutiny for an annual subsidy of just Rs 4,500.

Speaking on the topic, the official said, "Calculations made at 2% of the country's LPG subscribers suggest that the government will save Rs 1,260 crore annually."

The official also said that nearly 5 per cent of the people would forgo their entitlements to subsidized LPG cylinders by next year, further adding that such a development would ease the burden of subsidy.

Currently, consumers are entitled to 9 subsidized LPG cylinders per annum. Each of the nine cylinders carries a subsidy of around Rs 500.
