15 miners trapped in flooded mine in Meghalaya
About 15 miners are reportedly trapped inside a coal mine even after sixth day and there are few fears that they might have drowned in the water-filled mine in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district.
The miners have been trapped in the coal mine since Friday afternoon and rescue workers are working to pump out the water to save the men trapped inside. The efforts have not resulted in any a success as yet and the police have moved to arrest three person including the developer of the mine.
The miners were reported to be trapped after water from an adjacent abandoned mine when the workers accidently hit the wall. Mr N Ramachandran Meghalaya Director General of Police has expressed that there is very little hope of finding any survivors from the mine.
"There were total 30 miners working in the rat-hole mine. Fifteen managed to come out while 15 others got trapped inside. It is suspected that the miners accidentally punctured the wall of a flooded abandoned mine and huge quantity of water gushed inside the mine in which they were working," he said.
Mr RP Marak South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner has said that a magisterial investigation has already been ordered into the incident.
