Shillong, Apr 1 : Traders from South East Asian countries are participating in the 10th International Trade Fair in Shillong.

Traders from several South East Asian countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Kenya, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Egypt showcased a fabulous range of products at various stalls in the ten-day long fair.

The theme of the fair was ''connecting north east with the rest of the countries''. The fair will conclude on April 5.

Visitors thronged the venue to catch a glimpse of the world-class goods ranging from kitchen and other domestic appliances to toy and accessories.

"I really like all the neighbouring countries meeting together. This is an opportunity for all of us who cannot afford to go abroad and do shopping. I am really happy to get this opportunity," said Freedy, a resident.

It has provided a platform to traders and consumers to come face- to-face, further improving the cultural and trade relations between India and its northeast neighbours as well as South East Asian nations.

"Not only South Asian countries, but may be ultimately other countries can also come and join in. Not only they come here but we should also send our people from Northeast to different parts of South East Asian countries so that they can get exposure and come to know what type of trade flourishes in other parts. They can work out such system. I think it''s a good idea," said Geena, another resident.

Traders are happy with the overwhelming response and said that they would like to come back again.

"They very much appreciate our products. Even people who cannot afford to buy appreciate our product and only few bargain. We also give considerations to those people," said Lal Smite, a Thailand stall owner.

The trade and commerce of the state has considerably increased in the last few years with many prominent companies coming in the state with a view to expand their networks.
