Your Toothbrush could have Someone Else’s Poop on it: Study

You may be shocked to know that fecal coliform bacteria are present in around 60% of toothbrushes when they are used in community bathrooms at schools, universities and other organizations.

The study by Quinnipiac University has also unveiled that 80% of toothbrushes tested were having fecal matter that did not belong to the one using those brushes. Study’s lead researcher Lauren Aber of Quinnipiac University said it is quite concerning as first of all, toothbrush is found to be having fecal matter.

But things get worse when you come to know that fecal matter on your toothbrush is of someone else. It is having bacteria, viruses or parasites that are not part of your system.

The study researchers said different cleaning methods also had no much difference when it came to bacteria removal. The study presented at a meeting of the American Society for Microbiology has unveiled that toothbrushes in shared bathrooms at Connecticut’s Quinnipiac University were assessed.

They were found to be having detectable amounts of fecal coliform bacteria in bristles. Around 60% of them were found to be having the same. The researchers said that fecal coliform bacteria can be found in natural waterways and on outer layer of human’s skin and now on toothbrush.

The rod-shaped bacteria are found in the gut of warm-blooded animals. Even if you try cleaning toothbrush with mouthwash, hot and cold water, covering it with a protective cap, none of the method was found to be effective enough to stop the growth of bacteria.

Those who cover toothbrush with cover should note that the problem increases with this act. It has been said so as it provides a moist environment allowing the germs to grow.
