Young employees prefer technology firms, study
According to a new study, young employees working in technology sector said that they believe that the technology firms pay better salaries and offer more flexibility and satisfaction.
The survey conducted by PayScale, a compensation firm, and Millennial Branding, a management consulting company included 500,000 workers between the ages of 19 and 30. The survey found that the strongest skills of Generation Y employees include software, blogging and social media all of which are related to the technology sector.
Katie Bardaro, lead economist for PayScale said that technology sector firms are the most preferred not only because they hire high salaries but also because they offer flexibility to their employees. "The skills they've gained just by being young people are now useful skills in the labor force. No one is a better social media expert than someone who uses social media in their everyday life anyway," she said
The survey found that mobile technology giant, Qualcomm was the most preferred firm among Gen Y. The company pays an average of $90,000 to its young workers, about 72 percent of its young employees believe that their job is meaningful and 95 per cent are happy about flexible time schedules and 87 per cent say they have high level of job satisfaction.
Google was ranked second in the list ahead of medical technology company Medtronic on the third position. Intel was ranked fourth and Microsoft completed the top five at fifth position on the list.
