Young Americans increasingly Choosing Suffocation and Hanging to Commit Suicide

As per government data released on Thursday, young Americans are choosing suffocation and hanging to commit suicide.

Deaths by these measures have increased every from 1994 to 2012 among males and females aged between 10 and 24 years. The report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention unveiled that measures like poisoning, suffocation and hanging have high chances to lead to death.

Researchers at the CDC said suffocation and hanging measures resulted into 4.5 deaths per 100,000 among young men by 2012. The death rate was up from 3 per 100,000 in 1994. The rate was found to have increased by more than three times in women to 1.7 per 100,000 in 2012.

The CDC researchers mentioned in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report that overall, suicide rates declined among young males. On the other hand, rates increased among young females.

Among women, suffocation and hanging were found to be the most common ways to commit suicide. In the case of men, guns were the most common way. The researchers said that it is a troubling trend and they are not aware of the exact reasons as to what is making the youngsters to commit suicide.

CDC's Thomas Simon, a suicide expert, said the data does not unveil the reasons. The CDC said that when media shares about certain suicide methods then often it has been seen that officials witness a rise in suicides afterwards, using the method described.

It is quite worrisome as suffocation is lethal. Measures like poisoning and suffocation increases the chances of killing the victim. "Results of the analysis indicated that, during 1994-2012, suicide rates by suffocation increased, on average, by 6.7 percent and 2.2 percent annually for females and males, respectively", affirmed the researchers.
