Women with Diabetes in US have Total Lifetime Health Care Costs of $283,000
A new analysis has showed that diabetic women in the US have to bear lifetime health care costs of $283,000 and the condition badly affects their earning power as well. The analysis was conducted with the aim of looking at the costs from the rise in diabetes, which is now the plight of 382 million people world over. Experts have warned that the number is highly likely to touch the 592 million mark by 2035.
"Employment chances for women with diabetes in the U. S. are decreased by almost half. Women with diabetes also lose out on $21,392 in earnings per year-the highest loss due to diabetes worldwide", said study author Till Seuring of UEA's Norwich Medical School in a statement.
Cost of treatment is much higher in United States, UK and other developed countries. Countries with low and medium incomes, such as China, India, Mexico and Egypt, are the ones that account for two out of three new cases. Rapid urbanization, changing eating habits and not being involved in physical activities for long time are some of the major reasons blamed by Seuring for huge surge in numbers of diabetes patients.
Cost of treating the disease varies in different countries. Cost of treatment for type 2 diabetes in India is about $1,500 per person, per year. But spending on the treatment was found to be much higher in urban areas compared to rural areas in part due to the availability of care in cities, said researchers.
The study also found that about 18% of income is being currently spent on treatments by diabetes patients in Pakistan. Findings of the study have been published in Pharmaco Economics. The study revealed that cost of treating diabetes has a close association with a country's GDP, partly because more money is being spent by wealthier countries on healthcare.
