West Nile Virus detected in 3 Different Areas in Jefferson County

Authorities raised concerns by unveiling that three different areas in Jefferson County have been found to be having West Nile Virus. The virus has been found near Fenton, and in neighborhoods near De Soto and Arnold.

Workers handling the area have affirmed that they are facing shortage of weapons and running short on cash. Officials were of the view that no one has been infected yet, but with time, effort to save people from getting infected is becoming a task.

People living near these areas have stories to share about increasing number of mosquitoes. Tammy Walker who lives near Fenton said that whenever they step out of their house, they literally have to fight with mosquitoes.

Steven Crawford, a Jefferson County Environmental Public Health Specialist, shared that the county has two mosquitoes spraying trucks. “I’d actually be very concerned I would be actually helpless this is like the last line of defense for mosquitoes that carry West Nile. He said the virus can kill, “It attacks your central nervous system”, affirmed Crawford.

The county used to spend around $90,000 a year to kill mosquitoes, but now the number has dropped to $37,000. Owing to limited number of spray trucks, residents have to wait for the spray truck to come to their area.

Crawford stated that they are doing their best to address every complaint, but they focus will be on West Nile activity first. County health officials have suggested that people should wear insect repellant whenever they go out of their house. They should try to not go out after dusk, as during that time mosquitoes are in complete force and should not let water to collect in the area.
