Web development resource site Web Platform Docs launched in “alpha form”
As many as ten bigwig technology companies - including the likes of Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Facebook, among others - have teamed up for the creation of a community-driven site called Web Platform Docs, which will serve as a one-stop shop for documentation related to free web development.
Essentially to be an online knowledge base dedicated to the Open Web Platform, Web Platform Docs - which has already got the backing of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards body - was rolled out in "alpha form" on Monday; and it brings together the best available web-developer documentation from browser vendors, tech firms, and the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C).
With some of the well-known tech industry titans supporting the initiative, the Web Platform Docs resource site will deliver wide-ranging references and tutorials for developers in the times to come.
As of now, the documents available on the Web Platform Docs site cover a wide array of web-development-linked topics, including diverse subjects like tutorials, exhaustive reference material on HTML5 and CSS elements, JavaScript APIs, the Document Object Model (DOM), and even topics for beginners.
Though the site is still not open for full community participation, the organizations involved in the initiative intends making that happen "as early as possible," because - as Opera web evangelist Chris Mills put it in a statement - they "don't want this to come across as the giants of the web telling everyone else what to do."
