Sydney, Jan. 14: Sensational batting star David Warner has been put on standby for the Australian one-day squad with vice-captain Michael Clarke in doubt with a thumb injury.

The stunning elevation came on the same day his manager, Peter Lovitt, revealed his client will look to join a rival state if New South Wales cannot offer him a spot in their Sheffield Shield side.

Lovitt will seek an urgent meeting with the Blues next week to determine whether the 22-year-old is part of their cricket plans. If not, Warner will head to the open market.

"I have no intention of leaving NSW, I want to play for the Blues, but we will sit down and try to sort things out and if they can''t offer me a spot in the side, then we will have to assess the situation," Warner told the Sydney Morning Herald.

Warner has proved to be a world-class prospect for Australia, and has often said his ultimate goal is to play Test cricket.

Lovitt will meet Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert next week to iron out the issues surrounding his continued omission from the Shield team.

"David has always said that he wants to wear the baggy blue, he loves NSW and he wants to stay. I am very happy to support that decision. However, one of his goals is to play Test cricket for Australia. To do that, he obviously needs to be playing [first-class] cricket. If NSW can''t give him that experience of playing cricket, then his pathway to playing Test cricket becomes blocked. We have to sit down with Cricket NSW and discuss what the pathways for David are," Lovitt was quoted, as saying.

Gilbert said Warner must perform consistently for the NSW Second XI before selectors consider him, adding NSW would not stand in his way if he chose to move.

"He is certainly knocking on the door, the selectors are very mindful of his talent," Gilbert said.

"There is only one reason why David hasn''t played with us yet and that''s because of players in front of him."

Childhood friend Usman Khawaja holds the No. 6 spot, which Warner hopes to cement. Khawaja hit consecutive double centuries for the NSW Second XI this season - a feat never before achieved by a NSW player - to force his way into the side.

"Usman absolutely thumped down the door with sheer weight of runs. Competition for spots is very hot, and that''s what we want," Gilbert said. (ANI)
