Sydney, Jan. 21 : Australia should persist with New South Wales batting sensation David Warner at the top of its one-day order despite the likelihood he will fail more often than he succeeds, says former leg spinner Shane Warne.

The NSW left-hander has made scores of seven and five in the two innings since his superb knock of 83 in his international debut 10 days ago.

Warne believes the 22-year-old is struggling to live up to "his own expectations and everybody else''s expectations", but nevertheless should be given an extended run in the Australian one-day team.

"He''s had a couple of good balls (to be dismissed) . that''s going to happen," Warne said yesterday.

"He came out so well; he made it tough for himself at the start by getting that 80 off 40 balls, or whatever it was (89 from 43), but I think he''s exciting for cricket. I''d get him straight in the one-day side, the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Warne, as saying.

"What we''ve got to expect in (those) forms of the game, Twenty20 and one-day cricket, (is that) it can be a bit hit-and-miss at the top. You can come off some days, but the thing I like about him is that he''s a matchwinner. If you play 10 games, he might fail five or six times, but the four times it comes off, he''ll win you the game, so he''d be in my side every time."

Former wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist said the explosive opener must avoid the trap of trying to replicate his opening knock.

"Don''t put too much pressure on yourself," Gilchrist told Sky News while referring to Warner.

Warner has scored 343 runs at an average of 57.17 in the Ford Ranger Cup this season, with one century and one half-century, while in the KFC Big Bash, he has made 101 runs at 33.67, with one half-century.

Warner, who made his one-day debut on Sunday in Hobart, will keep his spot for at least the next two one-day matches against South Africa, starting on Friday at the SCG. (ANI)
