Video Shows How, When and Where Antibiotics Are Used among Animals
Use of antibiotics in animals is the most discussed topic, and now, a video has been released which can explain in details how, when and where these antibiotics are used. The video shows a virtual tour of a livestock production facility from University of Nebraska and Great Plains Veterinary Educational Center veterinarian Brad Jones, DVM.
Jones, in the video, explains the decision-making process about the use of antibiotic in cattle and pigs, including the diagnosis of illnesses, treatment and antibiotic use considerations and how animals are tracked from antibiotic administration to harvest.
"I think the use of antibiotics in our industry is appropriate and I would also use the term responsible. It's appropriate for animal well-being and comfort. It's appropriate to treat certain diseases that affect the animal", he said.
How we utilize antibiotics and the decision making of when to give the antibiotic requires a lot of thinking, not because of the laws and rules. He said it is necessary because of the importance of maintaining use of antibiotics in our industry for the health and well-being of animals.
The farm animal antibiotics video was created by the North American Meat Institute aiming to give interested consumers an inside look at the process of using antibiotics in livestock. The video also addresses many of the common misconceptions about their use of antibiotics.
NAMI Senior Vice President of Public Affairs Janet Riley said in a statement that consumers are being flooded with confusing and often inaccurate messages about how antibiotics are used in livestock production.
These messages suggest that there is very less control on the process, but a closer look on the farm shows this is clearly not the case, said Riley.
