Van Gaal's Bayern draw, Schalke win under Magath
Hamburg - Fancied Bayern Munich got a lucky 1-1 draw at TSG Hoffenheim in their Bundesliga opener as new coach Louis van Gaal is left with a lot of work.
Ivica Olic opened the scoring for Munich in the 25th, but Chinedu Obasi levelled for Hoffenheim, who had what appeared a clear goal not given early on.
"It is great to get a goal in the first match but I am sad that we didn't win," said Olic, with defender Philipp Lahm bluntly admitting: "We didn't play well and have a lot of work ahead of us."
German Coach of the Year Felix Magath had a better debut with Schalke with Kevin Kuranyi's double for a 2-1 win at promoted Nuremberg, but was also not very satisfied.
"We made a lot of mistakes and our game was not good," said Magath who came for the season on a four-year contract from champions VfL Wolfsburg and aims to give Schalke a first national title since 1958.
Wolfsburg opened the season on Friday with a stylish 2-0 over VfB Stuttgart, with Zvjezdan Misimovic and Footballer of the Year Grafite on target under new coach Armin Veh for what turned out the league lead heading into Sunday's games VfL Bochum vs Borussia Moenchengladbach and SC Freiburg vs SV Hamburg.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Hertha Berlin and Borussia Dortmund laboured to 1-0 wins over Hanover 96 and injury-plagued Cologne, respectively. Visiting Eintracht Frankfurt ambushed Werder Bremen 3-2 and Mainz 05 drew 2-2 with Bayer Leverkusen.
Van Gaal missed French star Franck Ribery and Misroslav Klose due to injury as he fielded newcomers Olic, Danijel Pranjic, record hiring Mario Gomez and Alexander Baumjohann.
Hoffenheim appeared to have drawn first blood when, according to television replays, Josep Simunic' header bounced over the line off the right post before goalkeeper Michael Rensing punched the ball away, but the match officials waived play on.
Munich then led against the flow of play with Pranjic feeding fellow-Croat Olic for the opener in the 25th. However, Obasi beat Rensing with a low shot in the 41st after nice work from Tobias Weis and Vedad Ibisevic for what turned out to be the final 1-1 score.
In Nuremberg, the former Germany striker Kuranyi broke the deadlock on the counter, set up nicely by Jefferson Farfan. Kuranyi was on target again early in the second half and Mintal's strike came too late to endanger Schalke's win.
"We played well at times. It is always good to score two goals," said Kuranyi. "A lot has changed at the club (under Magath). We have a clear aim and want to reach it together."
The cup winners Bremen suffered a first setback in their aim to return to the top of the league after a mediocre campaign.
Mesut Ozil's penalty and Boubacar Sanogo managed to cancel out Ioannis Amanatidis' brace. But Frankfurt had the last laugh from Martin Fenin in the 71st off a corner kick and Bremen's Sebastian Proedl was sent off late in the game.
In Mainz, the hosts led from an early header from Tim Hoogland and goalkeeper Heinz Mueller saved a penalty from Tranquilo Barnetta.
Leverkusen regrouped and Barnetta fed Eren Derdiyok and Stefan Kiessling for a double late in the first half before Daniel Gunkel salvaged a draw for Mainz with a stunning freekick.
Dortmund needed a 75th-minute own goal from substitute Marvin Matip to beat Cologne while Gojko Kacar came to the rescue of Hertha with his 81st-minute winner against Hanover. (dpa)
