Valencia-Villarreal draw leaves Sevilla in second place
Madrid - Sevilla moved up to second in the Spanish Liga on Saturday with a comeback 3-1 win away to Deportivo Coruna, together with Valencia's 3-3 draw at home to local rivals Villarreal later on the night.
These results leave Sevilla with 35 points from 18 games, nine points behind record-breaking leaders Barcelona, who are away to bottom team Osasuna on Sunday.
Valencia are now third with 34 points, two points ahead of Real Madrid, who are away to lowly Mallorca on Sunday.
Sevilla turned the tables on Deportivo thanks to goals from Luis Fabiano, Renato and Diego Capel - and despite the sending-off of Enzo Maresca.
"This was a really important win for us," said Renato, "given how it happened."
Rodolfo Bodipo gave Deportivo the lead in the 35th minute, with a near-post drive which surprised sluggish Sevilla keeper Andres Palop.
Seven minutes later things went from bad to worse for Sevilla, when Maresca was sent off for a mindless elbow on Bodipo.
But Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez changed the game by bringing Frederic Kanoute off the bench at half-time and putting him out on the right wing.
Six minutes into the second-half, Kanoute centred for Luis Fabiano to make it 1-1 at the near post.
And 11 minutes from time - with Deportivo pouring forward and leaving gaps at the back - the Mali international again broke free down the right. This time he centred for Renato to score with a diving header.
Three minutes into injury time Sevilla launched another lethal counter, and Jesus Navas centred for fellow winger Capel to make it 3-1.
Then came the six-goal thriller in Valencia, the most open match of the season so far.
Ruben Baraja headed Valencia into the lead after just two minutes, David Villa exquisitely made it 2-0 in the 11th minute with his 14th goal of the season.
But Villarreal refused to throw in the towel. They hit the Valencia crossbar twice in the first half, and Fabricio Fuentes reduced arrears just before half-time by heading in a corner.
Then came the frenetic finale. Joseba Llorente made it 2-2 for Villarreal 13 minutes from time, only for Edu to quickly restore Valencia's lead.
Joaquin clumsily pulled down Villarreal left-back Joan Capdevila for a late penalty, transformed by Guiseppe Rossi to make it 3-3.
"We should have had more control at the back," said Valencia's Villa.
Villarreal playmaker Santi Cazorla said that "a draw was the very least that we deserved tonight." (dpa)
