US names special envoys for Mideast, Afghanistan

US names special envoys for Mideast, Afghanistan Washington - US President Barack Obama on Thursday appointed former senator George Mitchell as his special envoy for the Middle East peace process.

Richard Holbrooke, an ambassador to the United Nations during the Clinton administration, was tapped as a special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presided over the announcement at the State Department, along with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. (dpa)
