Unstoppable Serena storms into US Open quarterfinals

Unstoppable Serena storms into US Open quarterfinalsNew York, Sep 6: American tennis ace Serena Williams eased closer to a fourth US Open title on Monday, storming past Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-4, at New York's Arthur Ashe Stadium to set-up a quarterfinal clash with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Williams has not dropped a set at Flushing Meadows this year and Ivanovic never looked likely to break that streak.

"It was so windy today, it was really tough. I feel so blessed to be back. A couple of months ago I never expected to be here. I feel so honoured now and every match is a bonus. It's all so exciting," the Age quoted Serena, as saying.

With defending champion Kim Clijsters not playing, and with former winner Maria Sharapova, Wimbledon victor Petra Kvitova and French Open champ Li Na losing before the third round, Williams is comfortably the tournament favourite.

Pavlyuchenkova had earlier defeat seventh-seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, to reach her first US Open quarterfinal. (ANI)
