UN climate talks in overtime
Poznan, Poland - A UN climate conference went into an extra day as countries argued over how to boost aid to poor nations suffering the effects of global warming such as floods, storms and drought.
Russia and Ukraine were said early Saturday to be resisting giving up some of their own aid from rich countries to developing countries.
At issue is a fund for protective projects, such as seawalls, which delegates at the 189-nation talks activated on Friday. The fund is worth about 60 million dollars, but European Union nations say billions are needed.
The two-week conference had been scheduled to end Friday. Governments have tentatively agreed on a work plan meant to lead to a global accord next December to cut emissions of gases blamed for global warming. (dpa)
