UK speeds up efforts towards 4G mobile goal

UK speeds up efforts towards 4G mobile goal As a result of the government's efforts in successfully brokering a deal with four bigwig UK mobile operators, high-speed 4G Internet service will make its way to the mobile handsets and tablets in the country in the 2013 first-half --- that is, six months ahead of the earlier expected timeline.

According to the information shared by Culture Secretary Maria Miller on Tuesday, the auction of fourth-generation - or 4G - mobile spectrum will commence at the end of 2012; and bidding will begin early next year. As such, mobile operators will be able to launch their 4G services to a large majority of UK's mobile-device users in the first half of 2013.

The new schedule for the launch on 4G services was chiefly the outcome of a crunch meeting which Miller recently hosted to help work out a compromise on the issue with mobile operators and industry regulator Ofcom.

The roll out of 4G services in the UK will lead to a mobile phone revolution which will give the country's flagging economy a notable £75billion boost; with the super-fast speeds enabling mobile-device users to connect to the Internet at a five-fold faster speed than what is currently available.

With the new 4G-launch agreement set to advance the UK roll out of high-speed Internet by nearly six months to 2013 summer, Ronan Dunne - CEO of O2 - said: "Bringing the timetable forward by a few months makes a massive difference."
