Two-Year-Old Rottweiler is Second Pup to Acquire 4 prosthetics
Brutus, a two-year-old rottweiler from Loveland, Colo., has become the second pup to get four prosthetics. It has received training and therapy for some months and now it is back on its feet.
Laura Aquilina, Brutus' foster mom, said, "He just has these little peg legs to get around on and he does a pretty fantastic job inside the dwelling".
Laura shared that Brutus was left out in the cold by its breeder when it was a puppy. It suffered severe frostbite due to the same and its breeder then amputated the pup's feet on his own. The dog was adopted, but was surrendered, as it became difficult for them to maintain the day-to-day demands of the dog.
In the summer, Brutus' luck worked when Aquilina started caring for the pup in June. Aquilina started working with pet rescue volunteer Laura Ornelas to launch the 'Better Paws for Brutus' GoFundMe campaign.
Through this campaign, they were able to raise $12,500. The amount was to be used for the pup's new limbs and physical therapy. In the fall, Brutus received his prosthetics from OrthoPets.
There is no doubt that it is difficult for Brutus to walk outdoors. But the pooch's rehabilitation will continue at Colorado State University, so that it can get adjusted to its new limbs.
Aquilina said that she wants to see Brutus in a position, where it can run and play with other dogs and go on hikes. Things are certainly improving as Brutus is learning to get used to the custom-made prosthetic limbs.
In September 2014, Brutus started walking with the prosthetics. Exercises and play is helping the 2-year-old learn balance, but much more is yet to be achieved.
