Train derails in northeast Montana
According to reports, on Thursday, a train derailed in northeast Montana; it was carrying oil. It derailed after the tracks reopened from another train derailment that happened on Tuesday. BNSF Railway spokesman Matt Jones said that it derailed at around 6:05 pm Mountain Time east of Culbertson, Mont.
There were 106 crude oil tank cars in addition to two buffer cars loaded with sand on the train. According to Jones, only two cars were upright; another twenty-two cars derailed. As per reports, the other rail cars were on the track in the isolated area close to the border of North Dakota and Montana.
As per Roosevelt County Sheriff Jason Frederick, approximately two of the cars were found to be leaking, however no fires were there as of around 11 pm Central Time and there are no reports of injuries. Jones said that local firefighters and law enforcement officers are present at the scene as a part of precautions.
As per the sheriff, traffic has also been rerouted at US Highway 2, which is only around 50 yards from oil tankers that have derailed.
According to Frederick, a hazmat crew was on a jet from Fort Worth, Texas, to the place where derailment occurred. They didn’t arrive until 11 pm. According to the sheriff, “It’s absolutely going to be a long night. It’s very unfortunate”.
According to the sheriff, nine rail cars derailed on Tuesday near Blair, Mont., approximately 20 miles to the west of the Thursday derailment.
