TRAI and DoT have different opinion on mobile number portability
It seems that the policy makers would take long before they arrive at a final decision regarding number portability. DOT’s decision to divide the whole country in two zones has been questioned by TRAI. It was earlier recommended by the telecom regulator that the country should be kept under one zone for mobile number portability facility.
Siddartha Behura, Telecom Secretary received a letter from TRAI, which said that the guidelines envisage two number portability zones. But the authority has recommended a single zone which will have one country operator for license of MNP clearing house and number portability database.
The subscribers are given the facility to have the option of switching operators without changing numbers under the Mobile number portability.
Other than this, TRAI has also raised issues against the section that all basic, national long distance (NLD) and international long distance (ILD) service providers shall also support the routing of calls to ported numbers. This may lead to implications on tariffs of both local and STD calls, according to the authority.
