Trade union leader killed as two-day strike begins
A trade union leader crushed to death by a bus in Ambala as two-day nationwide strike called by eleven trade unions began today.
Narender Singh, the treasurer of AITUC union, was trying to stop a bus that was being taken out from the Ambala Depot in spite of the strike.
Confirming the incident, Haryana Roadways Workers Union's district president Inder Singh Bhadana said, "The incident took place around 4 am this morning when Narender Singh, a bus driver by profession, tried to stop the vehicle which was being taken out from the Ambala Depot despite the strike."
Bhadana held the district administration responsible for the death of the union leader, saying the administration tried to forcibly ply the bus.
Separately, AITUC General Secretary Gurudas Dasgupta claimed that Narender Singh was stabbed to death by some miscreants. Dasgupta condemning the alleged murder, and stressed that the strike would go on despite such a shocking attack.
The incident led to violence by the other workers who damaged vehicles belonging to the district administration, including vehicles belonging to Deputy Commissioner of Police.
The trade unions have called the strike to show their protest against the government's inability in controlling price rise, implementing stricter labour laws, and hiking minimum wage to Rs 10,000 a month. They are also demanding the government to end disinvestment in public sector companies.
