Toronto getting ready for G20 summit and 'traffic chaos'
According to the official reports, Police are bracing for traffic chaos when the G20 summit begins in Toronto this month.
The Toronto Globe and Mail reported Friday that Toronto residents should prepare for major traffic headaches as lane restrictions and "periodic full closures" take place on the city's four major highways.
The newspaper also said that Ontario Provincial Police Sergeant Dave Woodford said the measures would inescapably create "significant delays."
According to the authorities, most of the shutdowns will affect Highway 427 and the Gardiner Expressway, the main arteries between Pearson International Airport and downtown Toronto, for the three days of the summit, which begins June 24.
Drivers heading for the airport are warned to "expect major delays" and area motorists are being urged to use public transport or plan alternate routes.
Toronto traffic Sergeant Tim Burrows has said, "What we'd ask everybody is lots of patience. Give yourself lots of extra time. Learn alternate routes now, before you need to know them that day. Go extra and far beyond what you would normally think is the best route."
Police has also said that in a downtown traffic diversion zone near the summit site cars will not be allowed to stop, idle or park.
The Globe and Mail further reported that vehicles in violation of the rules will be tagged or towed. (With Inputs from Agencies)
