Tokyo - The Tokyo stock market fell sharply in early trading Tuesday after a massive selloff overnight on Wall Street.

Within 20 minutes of the start of trading, the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average lost 579.87 points, or 4.93 per cent, to
11,163.74.

After a proposed, 700-billion-dollar rescue package was defeated in the US Congress, the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 7 per cent by the close of trading Monday. (dpa)
