Tobacco Industry makes $7,000 per smoking-related death every year: Report
On Thursday, the World Lung Foundation (WLF) released a report, as per which the tobacco industry makes around $7,000 per smoking-related death every year. In 2013, the tobacco industry had revenue of $44 billion. Also, 6.3 million consumers lost their lives due to tobacco-related illness.
The WLF estimates that the average is around $6,900 in revenue per death. The report unveiled that if the trend continues to take place then nearly a billion tobacco consumers will die from smoking or tobacco exposure in this century.
In a press-release on Thursday, WLF CEO Peter Baldini, said that there is a perception that people know everything about tobacco and the harms caused by it. But it is not true, as in every edition of their report titled, The Tobacco Atlas, they reveal something new about the industry, its tactics and the harm caused by it.
In a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), out of 6.3 million global tobacco-related deaths each year, nearly 600,000 are caused by second-hand exposure. After knowing about this troubling numbers, many influential personalities have shown their support towards the cause involving curbing those statistics.
One such example is tech billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates, along with business mogul and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, have promised a $4 million campaign to help countries around the world in their legal efforts to discourage attacks from the tobacco industry.
“We are at a critical moment in the global effort to reduce tobacco use, because the significant gains we have seen are at risk of being undermined by the tobacco industry’s use of trade agreements and litigation”, said Bloomberg.
He affirmed that they will support the nations as they take actions to protect their populations against the deadly health effects of tobacco use.
