TN government to invest 800 crore in drinking water projects
The state government of Tamil Nadu has said that it is planning to invest about Rs. 800 crore in drinking water supply projects in the state.
The plans include proposals to build plants for Ramanathapuram and Tuticorin districts in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said in a statement that there is a need of desalination plants as the water resources in the state are falling and are unreliable. The government is set to build two 100 million-litres-a-day (MLD) desalination plants in the districts because of unreliable and quality issues with the ground water.
The Chief Minister has also announced several combined drinking water projects in the state. teh government will develop projects in Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Tircuhirappalli by using water from Cauvery, Bhavani and Collidam from several districts. All of these projects are expected to be taken up within this year, according to the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, she also said that as about 40-60 per cent of waste collected in local bodies is bio-degradable, the government is looking to generate power from solid waste. Power plants are to be set up at five corporations and 24 municipalities with an investment of Rs 27 crore to produce power from solid waste.
