Testosterone Therapy lowers Risks of Heart Attack: Study
A new study has confirmed that testosterone therapy can provide help to aged men in living a longer life. According to the new research co-authored by an Indian-origin researcher, testosterone in older men can be restored to normal level, which means risk of health problems stroke and heart attack can be lowered. The process of restoring testosterone can be carried out through injections, gels and patches.
The researchers of the study also said individuals who did not reach normal levels even after treatment did not observe same advantages as those men who levels managed to reach normal. Rajat Barua, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Kansas and an author of the study, said the new study is the first to show that older men can have benefits only if they are given dose to restore testosterone.
Barua said, “Patients who failed to achieve the therapeutic range after testosterone replacement therapy did not see a reduction in heart attack or stroke and had significantly less benefit on mortality”.
There are possibilities that the new study will start a new debate over the advantages and disadvantages of testosterone therapy for an individual’s heart. Earlier this year, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advised clinicians not to over-use the testosterone therapy. The agency also suggested that the therapy could pose risks to heart.
In the new study, the researchers included about 83,000 men of 50-year-old with low testosterone. The participants received care between 1999 and 2014.
