Teletext to close service in January 2010
Teletext said that it would switch off its news and information service two years ahead of scheduled time i. e. in January 2010, instead of 2012.
According to the company, adverse economic conditions as well as regulator Ofcom's decision not to back state intervention to support the continuance of the commercial Teletext service after 2014 are responsible for the early shutdown of the service.
It should be noted here that shutdown of Teletext will kick approximately 70 people out of jobs.
Although Teletext's news and information services, both on analogue and digital are planed to cease in Jan. 2010, yet its profitable holiday service on Freeview and other commercial services will move forward.
At present the service is available free of cost on channel Four and Five on ITV.
