Teen who was forced to get Chemotherapy requests Judge to allow her Go Home

During a closed-door hearing, a 17-year-old girl and her mother requested the release of the teen from state custody after she was forced to undergo chemotherapy. The teen, Cassandra C, testified on Monday through teleconference in Juvenile Court.

The teen recently came to know that her cancer is in remission and she said that she has no problem with receiving treatment. But, she and her mother want to end her custody by the Department of Children and Families to allow her go home, and not spend time in agony until the chemotherapy is complete next month.

According to Michael Taylor, an attorney for the teen's mother, Jackie Fortin, the judge must consider the request to lift the temporary custody order. If the permission is not granted, the teen should at least be allowed to be visited by her mother at the hospital. Cassandra has revealed that DCF has restricted her from having contact with her mother.

“We'd like to end the whole thing, but if we can't, we want to do as much as we can for her. She wants to be with her mother”, said Taylor.

Cassandra said in a text message to Eyewitness News that her mom has the greatest importance in her life and no amount of food and gifts could replace her. She added that DCF has allowed a few friends and families to visit her, but not every day. Other kids there are living with their loved ones and this is what Cassandra is missing.

Doctors and DCF have previously stated that Cassandra could have died without the chemo treatment. After Cassandra turns 18 in September, she would be legally allowed to decide her medical treatment.
