Afghan mobile phone firm gets 55-million-dollar loan for expansionManila - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Wednesday it was providing a 55-million-dollar loan to Afghanistan's leading mobile phone provider to expand its coverage to parts of the country with little or no telecommunications infrastructure in place.

The Manila-based ADB said the loan to Telecom Development Company Afghanistan Ltd (Roshan) would also support the roll-out of a mobile banking system that allows subscribers to transfer money through their mobile phones without having to open bank accounts.

Malaysian firm, German experts to start joint anti-hacking research

Kuala Lumpur  - Malaysia's IT research company Mimos is to begin joint research with Germany's Ruhr-University Bochum in efforts to tackle cybercrime, a news report said Tuesday.

Both parties had recently signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct joint research into a hardware that could block security invasions on the internet, The Star newspaper's online news portal said.

"Phishing, pharming, virus attacks and hacking of systems belonging to companies is no longer done for fun or curiosity but is now big business, as there is money to made from such invasions," Mohamed Ridza Wahiddin, head of Mimos' Information Security Cluster, was quoted as saying.

Computer simulation offers cheap, faster method to make reliable car components

Washington, August 12 : Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM in Freiburg, Germany, have come up with a computer simulation method that can predict in record time when and where heavily stressed engine components are likely to fail, and thereby significantly reduce the time required by car manufacturers new engine components.

Exhaust fumes coming out of car engines at up to 1050 degrees Celsius expose the engine components to tremendous stress, for they expand heavily in the heat. On frosty days, on the other hand, the material contracts.

Such temperature fluctuations put the material under enormous pressure.
